Establishment 1998

M.A. in English (Initially known as Applied English) was introduced in 1998 under the aegis of Faculty of Education and Allied Sciences. In 2025 after the approval from state Government, when Faculties in the University were restructured, the Department came under the Faculty of Linguistics. The focus of the Department is on multi-dimensional development of students along with equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for the job market. Keeping the all-round development of students in view, we adopt a cohesive, realistic, highly motivational teaching strategy to train and teach the students. Modern technology and audio- visual aids are regularly used to equip the students with linguistic competence. The syllabus has been designed as per UGC’s latest model curriculum with the purpose to provide exposure and sensitivity to students towards literature and to prepare them for employability in other sectors, along with conventional teaching job. The syllabus is also modified on time to time as per the requirements of competitive exams and job- market.

Another special feature of the course is that along with all the papers of English literature, which are prescribed for M.A. English students in colleges, this master course (M. A. English) in the university campus has incorporated some job-oriented papers. The same augments the ability of students by nurturing their latent inherent talents and chiseling their linguistic skills. Technical papers like Phonetics and Linguistics Skills, Research Methodology and Professional Communication, etc. provide additional skill to students to work in various capacities.
