The 'Department of Education' came into existence in the campus of
Rohilkhand
University in 1986.
At that time, the department had just an M. Ed. programme as a regular study
course (10 seats) and Ph. D. programme, and as its faculty strength had just one
Reader and one Lecturer. With the passage of time, rigorous efforts of the
teachers and persistence at the administrative level resulted into upgrading and
modernization of the M. Ed. course, introduction of newer course of teacher
education, increase in the infrastructure and faculty strength, completion of
numerous research projects, and organization of various National/Regional
seminars, symposia and workshops on themes of educational importance. And now
the Department has gained its well deserved status on the national map of
teacher-education institutions.
Keeping in view the scope and needs of the academic activities of
the department, the University decided in 1995 to create an altogether new
faculty - the "Faculty of Education and Allied Sciences" for the courses
running in the university campus and this department became a part of this new
faculty.
The existing M. Ed. course was upgraded in line with the UGC-NET
syllabus, and the inclusion of additional practical content-cum-theory paper on
computer applications in education resulted into a distinct course of its nature
- the Applied M. Ed., a course running in the University campus only.
The Department took lead in developing curriculum for pre-service
teacher-training programme to teach vocational trades in secondary schools at
national level and developed courses for 80 trades related to Home Economics
Education, Business & Marketing Education, Science & Technology Education, and
Agricultural Education along with pedagogy content and various
philosophical, psychological and technological foundations of education for B.
Ed. Vocational Education programme.
In 1993, the department submitted a proposal to the State
Government to start B. Ed. (Specialization in Vocational Education)
course in the university campus. The State Govt. endorsed the initiatives and
for the first time in the whole country a teacher-training programme especially
targeted to pre-service training of vocational teachers was started in 1995 in
the Department. Meanwhile, the programmes of B. Ed./M. Ed. Special Education,
Computer Application in Education, and Environmental Component in Teachers
training were sanctioned by the U.G.C. and the Department materialized these
programmes in the courses of B. Ed.
(Specialization in Special Education) and
B. Ed. (Specialization in Educational Computing), the courses started in 1995.
In 1995, the UGC gave the distinct status of
Department of Research Support (DRS)
to the department under its Special Assistance Programme (SAP) for promoting
excellence in research in the thrust areas of Educational Technology, Vocational
Education and Special Education. And the same year, considering the academic and
research achievements, the infrastructure, and growth and development, the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India gave department the
distinct status of Institution of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE).
From the session 1996-97, the Department of B.Ed./M.Ed. increased
intake to 30 seats in Applied M. Ed. and 220 seats in B. Ed. (all three
specializations). During this session, the Department played an important role
in establishing its Practice Teaching Lab. -
"Pt. Deena Nath Misra Model School" - on the land donated by a freedom-fighters'
society, in the nearby sub-urban area. During the same session National Seminar
on 'Women Participation in Science, Technology & Management Education' and
National Conference on 'Re-engineering Education' were organized with all
grandeur.
In the next session (1997-98) a new course – M.Ed. (Special
Education) – was introduced in the Department. And at the same time, new
vocational trades were introduced in B. Ed. (Specialization in Vocational
Education). This year the department organized a National Seminar on
'Environmental Awareness through Education'.
During 1998-99, a National Seminar on 'Higher Education in 21st Century: Vision & Action'
was organized and in the session 2000-01, the department hosted dignitaries from
all over
India for
National Seminar on 'Information Technology & Education: Vision & Prospects'.
The next session (2001-02) UGC extended the status of D.R.S. to the department for the
second term of five years and the department got another honour from the UGC to
be a Refresher Course Centre for organizing Refresher Courses in Education for
in-service higher education teachers. And the department organized two such
refresher courses - one during 2001-02 and other during 2004-05.
During 2004-05, the intake in Applied M. Ed. was increased to 40, and the department
organized another National Conference on 'Education for All' – with special
reference to Inclusive Education. This session has been important to the
department in yet another manner that the same year, the department was
recognized as one of the premier teacher-training institutions with the high
rating of A+ accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC).
In 2007, the UGC granted the status of D.R.S. to the department for third consecutive
term of five years from 2007 to 2012.
